Alabama schools deploy Internet filters
November 4,2010

Alabama’s Butler County Board of Education signed a three-year deal to deploy an Internet content filtering system. The school district will use Phantom Technologies' iBoss Web Filter system across its entire network in order to increase the safety of its students on campus, while also reducing liability risk.

“There has been no shortage of news regarding how easy it is for children to access inappropriate information online at the click of a mouse. It’s our job to make sure we stem this tide and offer a positive and secure educational environment,” said Matthew Shell, Technology Director for the Butler County Board of Education. “We chose the iBoss Web filters after a detailed formal RFP process for not only its feature/function set, but also its detailed reporting capabilities.”

iBoss Web Filter appliances provide layer 7 filtering at up to 10G throughput while ensuring federal Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliance and comprehensive forensic level reporting.

“The law imposes certain types of requirements on any school or library that receives funding for Internet access or internal connections from the E-rate program,” said Peter Martini, COO for Phantom Technologies. “We take our leadership role in offering robust and scalable solutions for a wide range of networking environments seriously, to the point that we ensure rich reporting and traffic analysis are required along with premium Web content filtering capabilities.”

Butler County Board of Education’s formal RFP process required potential bidders to do a product demonstration, where the agency then ranked the offerings based on their overall functionality as well as how well the products met their needs.  The iBoss platform was their top choice from those demonstrations, and, as it later turned out, the most cost-effective among the systems that were compared.

“Now that we've deployed the solution, I can attest to the fact that it does perform as advertised.  We have been very happy with our choice,” said Shell.
