Eager bookworms visiting the Pembroke Pines Library this summer will find a new addition between the latest biographies and great works of poetry.  But it won’t be another great read…instead it will be educational video games that are used in 25 schools across Broward County, Florida.  

The availability of the immersive video games is part of a newly announced joint program between Walter C. Young Middle School and the Pembroke Pines Library, where students ages 11-14 can take part in highly interactive math competitions using the DimensionM™ multiplayer video games. Students are welcome to play anytime during regular library hours, with tournament play taking place on selected dates in June and July.  

“Our library has always provided a window to a world of learning, opportunity, education, and more,” said Alicia McHugh, branch manager of Pembroke Pines Library.  “Now we have added in a huge dose of ‘more’ with this wonderful software tool that offers students a relevant way to practice what they have learned but have fun doing it during their summer vacation.”  

The DimensionU Learning System, developed by Tabula Digita, offers students a series of immersive missions that incorporate 3D graphics, sound, animation and storylines comparable to those in most popular commercial video games. By successfully navigating the hundreds of embedded math and algebra lessons, students rack up points and master math concepts discussed during the school year.
