Tuscaloosa City Schools go green
July 7,2009

Tuscaloosa City Schools (AL) recently overcame a major conflict—the district wanted to go green, but its goal of teachers and staff working together in groups usually required travel and use of building resources. With the help of Novell Teaming, the district was able to improve collaboration across schools through the use technology to meet both needs.

Novell helped the district create online workspaces for teachers and staff to share documents, coordinate tasks and share ideas through forums, wikis and blogs. They can also participate in discussions or conference calls from their homes or classrooms.

Previously, tasks like performing curriculum reviews or jointly editing documents took months. Now that all team members can log in to review and approve materials at any time, the process only takes a few days. The arts and education groups now use Novell Teaming to create a central repository for music and other materials, greatly enhancing collaboration across schools

The district’s administrative team publishes all administrative manuals online using Novell Teaming, giving its 1,300 faculty and staff centralized access to the most current policies and forms while also reducing printing and distribution costs—another step in Tuscaloosa’s goal to go green.
